The Bulldogs are excited to announce the addition of the Capital Beltway Football League to our family! Unlike the Charles County League, the Capital Beltway League offers a much broader weight to age matrix which accommodates more players and allows for much more uniform teams when it comes to ages. Some of the key advantages of the CBL are:

  • No boundry restrictions - Any one from any County or club can play for the Bulldogs in this league.
  • Cut of age date is August 1st which allows those that are turning 15 after that date and even going into 9th grade to play.
  • Games are played by high school federation rules.
  • Post season games are held at the college stadiums.
  • State championship at M&T stadium.

The Capital Beltway League also provides four times the amount of teams per division and a much higher level of competition then Charles County can provide. With all of this along with player exposure to high school coaches throughout Maryland and Post Season Play at some of the most prestigious football stadiums in Maryland, why would you want to play anywhere else?

The Westlake Bulldogs / Capital Beltway League is open to ALL Charles, Southern PG, Calvert and St. Mary’s County residents. There are NO boundaries within Charles, Calvert or St. Mary’s County that will dictate who can or who cannot play for Westlake in this league!

The Westlake Bulldog – Capital Beltway League Offering is geared for children ages 6 through 15, from the novice to the most experienced players that want to play youth tackle football in a competitive environment.  The season runs from August through December with post season playoff bracketed game followed by the super bowl, which is held at one of Maryland’s most prestigious college stadiums and followed by the Maryland State championship game held at M&T stadium.

Final placement of registrants between the CBL and the CCYFL league and divisions will be at the discretion of the Football Director

Charles County Youth Football League

tackle football 1 The Charles County Youth Football League or CCYFL, is a youth recreational league governed by the Charles County Parks and Recreation. Differences between the CBL include the some of the following:

  • Shorter games.
  • Limited weight classes that players can enroll in.
  • Mandatory play and match rules.
  • Only Charles County teams are allowed to play.
  • Only Charles County residents are allowed to register.

The Westlake Bulldog - Charles County League Offering is geared for children ages 5 through 14, from beginners to experienced players that want to play youth tackle football and have a great time doing it. The season runs from August through December with one post season playoff bracketed game followed by the super bowl, usually held at North Point stadium. A Bi-County championship game has been held for the last two years between the champions of Charles and Calvert Counties.

CCYFL Age/Weight Matrix

Practice begins on July 27, 2009 for the CBL and August 1, 2009 for the CCYFL. During July and until the first full week of school in August, practice is five days per week, Monday through Friday.  Practice is held at our practice field located at Mattawoman Middle School.  Times are generally 6:00-8:00 p.m. Some teams may vary slightly on times with board approval. Check with one of your child's coaches for the exact times. Once school starts, practices are from 6:00- 7:30 p.m. Some teams again may vary slightly on times with board approval. Your coach will advise you of the exact practice schedule.

Since football is by its nature an all-weather sport, and since we play football games in rainy weather, we will usually practice in the rain. Of course, if the rain becomes severe, or there is lightening/thunder in close proximity, practice will be temporarily suspended or canceled, for the safety of everyone. Your coaches will discuss specifics on procedures each team will use regarding inclement weather.

What to expect during the first week of practice

Those who have participated in Westlake Bulldog football know generally what to expect that first day, and first week, of practice. With football your coaches will advise you on what equipment, if any, to bring to practice the first day. Some teams wear some or all of their equipment, others may not wear any the first day.
The first week is spent on physical conditioning and acclimation to the weather and the equipment. Football players would be well advised to get plenty of exercise during the summer months, especially out in the sun. It is very hot in August, and if you have been spending the summer in the air conditioning, being a couch potato, you are going to have a difficult time getting used to the heat.
A portion of the first day of practice will be filled with administrative and welcoming duties. You will meet your new coaches and fellow players and learn the philosophy of your team. Your coaches may discuss a number of other issues as well.
Bring plenty of water to practice. You will get a number of water breaks during practice, so don't expect someone to provide you with drinking water. Also, don't bring any glass bottles or containers. You can pick up small insulated personal water coolers for very little money. Or bring water in a plastic jug. But remember, NO GLASS OF ANY TYPE.
